National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders have intensified grassroots mobilisation efforts across Kalangala’s island communities as the party seeks to secure victory in the upcoming Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
The latest mobilisation drive was conducted on Bunyama Island in Bujumba Sub-county, where party leaders engaged residents as they campaigned for NRM flag bearer Idah Nabayiga ahead of the June 24, 2026, election.
The campaign brought together NRM leaders, local party structures and residents, with the ruling party seeking to reclaim the parliamentary seat previously held by the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Leading the mobilisation exercise was NRM Vice Chairperson for the Buganda Region and Minister of State for Regional Cooperation, Haruna Kasolo, who expressed confidence that the party would win the election.
“We are fully committed to ensuring that the NRM candidate wins this election. Our focus is on reaching every voter and communicating the party’s development agenda to the people of Kalangala,” Kasolo said while addressing supporters.
The mobilisation campaign, coordinated by Bujumba Sub-county NRM Chairperson John Mike Yiga, covered villages including Kagoonya, Kivunza, Bunyama and Kisujju, where party leaders held community meetings and conducted door-to-door engagements.
Yiga said the party remains optimistic about its chances, arguing that residents want stronger representation and effective advocacy for development projects.
“NRM has a clear vision for the development of Kalangala. We believe the people understand the importance of having leaders who can effectively engage government and advocate for critical services and infrastructure projects,” he said.
He described Nabayiga as an experienced leader with a record of supporting community development during her previous term as Woman Member of Parliament.
“Nabayiga demonstrated her ability to lobby for projects that directly benefited local communities. We believe she remains the best candidate to represent the interests of the people of Kalangala,” Yiga added.
According to NRM officials, the mobilisation campaign will continue across other parishes and villages in the district as the party seeks to consolidate support before campaigns officially close on June 22.
The by-election follows the death of former Kalangala Woman Member of Parliament Hellen Nakimuli, who represented the district on the National Unity Platform ticket and passed away in April this year.
The Electoral Commission has cleared five candidates to contest for the seat. They include NRM’s Idah Nabayiga, NUP candidate Irene Nampala, and independent candidates Sharifa Babirye, Helen Flavia Nagawa and Agnes Nasuuna.
With days remaining before polling, political activity has intensified across Kalangala as candidates and their supporters make final efforts to win over voters in what is expected to be a closely contested election.
